Description:
Running Through Her Past is an innovative short documentary film exploring the life of Natasha “Courage” Bacchus, an Afro-Guyanese Queer woman born in Tkaronto (Toronto). Courage, a former Deaflympics track and field athlete, reflects on her journey of self-discovery, overcoming systemic barriers, and the evolution of her identity from Natasha to Courage. Through visual vernacular, animation, and experimental sound design, the film intertwines Courage’s personal narrative with universal themes of oppression, resilience, and empowerment.
Supported by a Canada Council for the Arts grant, this project is part of Ebony R. Gooden’s Black Deaf Docuseries, a series amplifying the voices of Black Deaf Canadians. Running Through Her Past is designed to bridge accessibility for Deaf and hearing audiences alike, with soundscapes created from a Deaf perspective and ASL integrated into the storytelling.
