Multi-Lens Existence: Perceptions (2023)

Description:

Multi-Lens Existence: Perceptions was the culmination of a 4-week long exploration and creation process. The artists, Black Deaf contemporary visual body-movement artist Jenelle Rouse and hearing interpreter and contemporary dancer Shelly Nafshi, hosted two performances where community members were invited to witness, participate and provide thoughts and reflections. This project examined power, relationship and oppression through movement, projection, light and shadows.  The artists aimed to redefine how stories are perceived and experienced. The performances were rooted in body expression, fostering a dialogue between artists and the local community.

As the videographer, Ebony R. Gooden documented the raw energy of the performances, capturing the interplay of movement and audience feedback.

Event Highlights:

  • Collaboration: A dynamic partnership between Jenelle Rouse, Shelly Nafshi, and local community members.
  • Dates & Location: August 31–September 1, 2023, at Elmwood Community League, Edmonton, Alberta.
  • Themes: Movement-based storytelling, shifting perceptions, and experimental artistic expression.
